In November 2008, Vanoil's 100 percent owned subsidiary, Avana Petroleum, and Black Marlin Energy (since acquired by Afren plc) signed a production sharing contract covering some 15,000 km2, of shore Seychelles in a region where historic wells have encountered hydrocarbons and there are a great number of seeps. Some 3,300 km2 3D seismic and 9,000 line km 2D have been shot by Vanoil/Avana and its partner Afren.

Oil Industry in the Seychelles

In 1984, the Seychelles Government established a national oil company, currently named PetroSeychelles, to bolster its ability to deal with exploration and other activities related to the development of the petroleum potential of the State.

Four wells have been drilled historically in the Seychelles, well over 50,000 line km of 2D seismic have been shot. Currently, four companies are active in exploration in the Seychelles, Vanoil, Afren, Ophir and WHL Energy.

Areas A and B

Location: Located on the Seychelles micro-continent in shallow to deep water in the northern half of the Seychelles plateau
Resource Type:Oil & Gas
Property Size:14,319 km2
Stage of Development:Exploration
Current Work Program:Drilling planned in 2014/2015
Potential:2.801 bn boe unrisked Pmean (gross to partners, source: Afren)
Ownership:Vanoil (25%), Avana (75%)

Vanoil holds a 25% working interest in Seychelles Areas A and B with its partner Afren. Areas A and B comprise 14,319 km2 in total and are located on the Seychelles micro-continent in shallow to deep water in the northern half of the Seychelles plateau in a region where Amoco previously drilled three exploration wells were drilled, all of which encountered oil shows and, along with the presence of multiple seeps and tarballs, confirms the presence of a working hydrocarbon system. Some 50,000 line km of 2D regional seismic has been acquired to map the basin. Interpretation points to a Seychelles, thick and contiguous sedimentary section with source (Perma-Triassic-Karoo), reservoir(Perma-Triassic-Karoo) and seal potential source and reservoir.
  • Vanoil and Afren have acquired some 9,000 line km 2D seismic
  • Vanoil and Afren have acquired 3,375 km2 3D seismic
  • Drilling is planned for late 2014
